General Summary: This is an officer level position that is responsible for leading the teams responsible for a variety of financial reporting, trend analyses, and general performance management for Unum US. The head of this area is expected to work with operational management to assist them in their financial performance. Principal Duties and Responsibilities - Lead teams responsible for weekly, monthly and quarterly reporting of financial metrics and the monitoring of their impact on financial results and plans.

Expenses are a key lever in realizing margins in these businesses and the incumbent will be accountable for partnering with senior leaders to develop a margin strategy that reflects a deep understanding of the processes and related expenses.
- Ownership of the Services pro forma statement and maintaining the appropriate connections to pricing, operations, business transformation efforts and financial goals so it is always the most relevant view of the financial outlook.
- Independently and/or through leadership of a team, establish systems that provide a deep understanding of processes and operational outcomes. Ensure design is robust enough to offer insight for both current and future state operations. Build models that connect financial assumptions to operational metrics.
- Responsible for providing official financial metrics to external constituents related to inforce, customers, claims, persistency, profitability and expenses for use in industry studies, surveys, legal requests, investor and rating agency presentations, etc.
- Leads cross functional teams that work through complex business situations and propose solutions to information related challenges.
- Lead team responsible for keeping operational partners apprised of emerging trends through a variety of written and oral presentations (Planning, Acquisition Operating Group, Quarterly Operating Review, Balanced Business Scorecard metrics, Benefits Operational Reviews)
- This incumbent will oversee the workforce staffing and productivity models; a critical operational component that ensures current and forecasted staffing is aligned with meeting and anticipating customer needs and financial expectations
- Work with Operations management to understand performance relative to plan, developing action steps to address variances, and ongoing monitoring and management
- Facilitate the process to drive the financial and operational strategies that will realize financial, operational and csat goals
- Partner with operational leaders to ensure tactical execution of strategies. Build systems to support the ability to measure the value capture
- Evaluate expense drivers and formulate a long term roadmap to realize expense and margin goals
- Contribute to process redesign efforts by offering insights into expense drivers and the value of new capabilities or processes. Ensure connections to income statement, staffing models, unit costs and budgets
- Able to present complex data, information and strategic recommendations to varying audiences, including those in senior leadership positions.
- Ability to discern where internal and external metrics are indicating opportunities for improvement or refinement, including for pricing and productivity modeling purposes
- Responsible for workforce management function that utilizes data-driven modeling to ensure appropriate current and project staffing levels for high-volume organizations
- Responsible for establishing the long term agenda for operational and financial metrics
- Support the growth and development of key information that will drive growth and value for the organization (i.e. broker segmentation and evaluation, customer integration and inforce management, expense forecasting).
- Lead teams that supply financially driven reporting and decision tools for Underwriting, Benefits and other areas as appropriate
- Partner with Corporate Finance, UUSF Systems, IT Data Warehouse Management, IT Finance or other functional business areas to identify project resources for multiple and complex projects. Shares overall responsibility for project outcome and success.
- Overall responsibility for the creation and accuracy of revenue, expense and risk based components of monthly and quarterly information packages, Unum US Balanced Business Scorecard and Quarterly Operating and Earnings Reviews
- Ongoing responsibility for implementing process improvement strategies within organization to drive efficiency gains as it relates to reporting and ad hoc support
- Helps identify and implement opportunities for reporting automation, including the ability to influence evolution and connection of key data sources to ensure alignment to business needs
Job Specifications - Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred
- 8+ years previous experience in Operations areas (Sales, Underwriting, Products, Benefits, etc.)
- Experience with services, logistics, or supply management processes preferred
- Familiarity with financial reporting metrics (sales, persistency, profitability, claims, operating expense ratios, etc.)
- Proven ability to manage, develop and motivate people
- Strong project management skills with experience driving process improvements and efficiencies
- Ability to operate in matrix organizations, and on cross functional teams
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with acumen in both professional and business communications
- Previous experience working through periods of change
