Financial Strategy Teams
The Capital Planning team evaluates proposed capital projects and provides recommendations to senior leaders. Analysts partner with Division Controllers and business leaders across the company to provide analytical support for strategic projects. Additional responsibilities include managing the capital spending forecast, providing support to Corporate Real Estate during lease negotiations, and supporting enterprise-wide prioritization efforts.
Corporate Development and Planning
The Corporate Development & Planning group provides team members with the opportunity to tackle complex, multi-faceted business problems. Analysts on this team create value for American by having an opportunity to participate in the entire life cycle of a project from inception to implementation:
The Investments Team plays a central role in evaluating and executing opportunities for investing the company’s capital to generate incremental value for the business. This includes identifying potential M&A targets, performing strategic analysis and financial valuations, leading due diligence efforts, and coordinating with internal and external stakeholders to finalize deal terms. Recent transactions include equity investments in JetSMART, a South American airline, as well as Vertical, an eVTOL aircraft manufacturer. Analysts work closely with other Financial Strategy groups, Network Planning, Alliances, and with senior leaders across the company.
The Partnerships Team drives investment opportunities that position American for the future. Analysts perform a blend of traditional analyses that inform investment decisions and handle relationship management with external organizations like startup accelerators and consulting firms to help identify innovative ideas. Analysts work collaboratively with senior leaders across the company to facilitate partnerships with external organizations that can generate value for American.
The Planning Team guides enterprise-wide programs that achieve cost, revenue and operational goals. Analysts tackle complex program management that balances stakeholder alignment between senior leaders, timely execution of critical milestones and change management to care for our team members. Analysts in this group function as internal consultants for American, establishing processes, governance, and reporting for cross-departmental initiatives.
The Profitability Team provides team members with a robust understanding of flight profitability, airline revenues, and industry results. In-depth analyses into new market performance and flight profitability reports help analysts build a strong foundation in airline economics. Analysts develop and maintain a suite of analytical tools to measure profitability and work cross-functionally with Network Planning, Tech Ops Planning, Treasury, and Fleet Planning to drive strategic decision-making.
The Operating Budgets and Long-Range Planning teams enable analysts to develop an enterprise-level understanding of the airline and Company’s financial outlook, and present timely and accurate analysis to senior leadership to support decision making. Team members will develop a foundation in financial statement analysis, financial modeling, and presentation of analytical findings.
The Operating Budgets Team produces consolidated forecasted financial statements and collaborates with leaders in Network Planning, Operations, Revenue Management and Finance to build the Company’s annual budget. The team analyzes and presents financial results to senior leadership, works with operational leaders to understand business issues and opportunities, and coordinates with Investor Relations to support quarterly Wall Street guidance and communication of earnings results.
The Long-Range Planning Team is a capstone team responsible for managing the Company’s long-range strategic plan. Analysts collaborate with various teams across the Finance, Treasury, Revenue Management and Network Planning organizations to maintain a comprehensive 5-year financial outlook, including forecasted operating capacity, earnings and liquidity. The team provides an update for each Board of Directors meeting, and supports decisions regarding growth, capital structure and financings, and Wall Street guidance.
We have implemented significant changes to simplify and modernize our fleet through the pandemic. The Fleet Planning team has been integral in executing these projects and will continue to drive further optimization of our fleet – the largest in the world! An analyst on this team is responsible for evaluating aircraft economics to determine the most efficient strategies to provide the right aircraft for our global network. This entails evaluating billion dollar aircraft purchase decisions along with the strategic merits of aircraft retirements in conjunction with our colleagues in Network Planning and Technical Operations. Additionally, the team gets routine exposure to many of our senior leaders in Finance, Commercial, Operations and Customer Strategy.
Taking care of our team members is critical to our long-term success. Labor Analysis analysts participate in union negotiating sessions alongside our Labor Relations and Legal departments and provide strategic and economic direction to senior leaders pertaining to labor contracts, employee compensation and benefits, and team member productivity. The wages associated with our team members are the largest single expense at the airline, and the Labor Analysis team is central to the strategic management of that expense. Due to this importance of this role, the group gets unique exposure to certain groups throughout the company, including the People and Operations Planning departments.
The Treasury team is responsible for the analytics, strategy development, transaction execution and relationship management surrounding the company’s sourcing of capital, liquidity management and mitigation of financial risk. The team analyzes aircraft financing options, non-aircraft financing facilities and risk management instruments, while also monitoring the company’s capital structure, credit rating and liquidity position.
