The VP of Advanced Data Science functions as the strategic business leader of the area. S/He will play a meaningful role in evangelizing the role of data science in driving outsized business results for the company. They will be responsible for coordinating with various functional / business unit leaders to define a portfolio of Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI / ML) driven use cases. This role works with their leadership team and the Vice President of Data Strategy to develop and implement strategic recommendations for Advanced Data Science and Data Strategy to better connect data scientists, and the data strategy, elevate the practice of data science & data management and deliver significant business impact across the value chain.
CORE WORK ACTIVITIES
Leading AI / ML Strategy and Vision
Evangelize the use of Advanced Data Science techniques to drive business outcomes.
Develop a vision and strategy for AI and Machine Learning and its applicability to Marriott’s Consumer operations
Create a portfolio of AI / ML driven use cases in partnership with other business leaders
Lead the development of data and technical strategy to deliver AI / ML use cases at scale in partnership with the Data Strategy and Technology teams.
Partner with Privacy team to ensure the AI / ML strategy conforms to the various regulations and can deliver explainable models as needed
Managing Execution of Strategy
Develop tactical execution plans for operationalizing the strategy in partnership with the Data, channel and Technology leaders
Help drive prioritization of resources and budgets across the most valuable use cases
With the team develop and deliver on the appropriate use cases with relevant test strategies and measurement plans in place
Present findings and outcomes of the use cases to senior business leaders (Global Officers, Presidents etc,)
Leading the Advanced Data Science Team
Ensure clarity of mission and communicate the mission effectively to the team
Set clear goals for the organization, communicate them effectively and ensure plans are in place to deliver to the goals.
Create a sense of pride and accomplishment in the delivery of use cases and outcomes
Set specific learning and growth goals for the team. Work with HR to hire and recruit talent. Develop a strategy to work with top educational institutions to learn from the educational faculty and develop a hiring pipeline for top talent.
Mentor key team members to help them grow in various aspects both technical and non-technical.
Managing and Conducting Human Resources Activities
Interviews and hires employees.
Promotes the fair and equitable treatment of employees.
Facilitates regular, ongoing communication in department (e.g., staff meetings).
Fosters employee commitment to providing excellent service, participates in daily stand-up meetings and models desired service behaviors in all interactions with customer and employees.
Incorporates customer satisfaction as a component of staff/operations meetings with an emphasis on generating innovative ways to continually improve results.
Sets goals and expectations for direct reports using the performance review process and holds staff accountable for performance goals.
Solicits employee feedback.
Utilizes an “open door policy” and reviews employee satisfaction results to identify and address employee problems or concerns.
Promotes adherence to policies consistently, follows disciplinary procedures and documents items according to Standard and Local Operating Procedures (SOPs and LSOPs) and supports the Peer Review Process.
Conducts annual performance appraisal with direct reports according to Standard Operating Procedures.
Champions change ensures brand and regional business initiatives are implemented and communicates follow-up actions to team as necessary.
Identifies talents of direct reports and their teams and assists with their growth and development plans.
Education and Experience
Twelve or more years’ experience in the practice of Data Science, AI and Machine Learning, demonstrating progressive career growth and a pattern of exceptional performance.
Experience defining vision and transformational AI / ML strategy for business units.
Significant experience required in development of Customer Lifetime Value models, Regression and Time series analysis, clustering and classification, Supervised / Unsupervised Learning techniques, Neural networks, experimentation and multi-variate testing.
Experience developing real-time recommendation engines that are performant in high volume consumer digital environments is a plus.
Hands on experience working with current relevant technologies such as Jupyter Notebooks, Python, Spark, Tensor Flow, AWS EMR/ Hadoop, SageMaker, Domino Data Labs etc. is a must.
Experience building Data Science functions from scratch, hiring, developing and retaining talent in this space.
Demonstrated ability to deliver results under difficult conditions, particularly when faced with complexity and ambiguity.
Advanced Degree (Masters) from an accredited university in Mathematics, Statistics or related major. PhD or post-graduation specialization in AI / ML is desired.
Knowledge of privacy rules and the impact to creating models that meet privacy regulations, explainability guidelines while delivering economic benefit is critical to this role.
